Readers respond: Give pod shelters a chance

The good folks of Hazelwood deserve a thank you. The scrappy little nonprofit We Shine is building a small pod of transitional cabins for homeless people in the neighborhood, on a lot next to a church parking lot. I am one of the volunteers working to put finishing touches on the modest shelters. The project will demonstrate that small, well-run pods should be welcomed and supported by every Portland neighborhood association.

It has been reported that nearly a thousand Hazelwood residents complained to Commissioner Dan Ryan about the project. That means that 22,000 Hazelwood residents did not complain. Thanks to those good folks for giving this project, and its residents, the chance to succeed, and for setting an example for other neighborhoods to follow.
